I have placed 4 SEQ files on the school's course server (check our course's web page):
Be sure to use Sequitur to play with the SEQ files (play & review).
If you do not have Sequitur yet, either get it from your classmates or download it here:

Please print out Parts 1, 2 and 3 (optional: not every handout includes this), and Part 5. Please answer the questions in Part 5. DO NOT print out the many, many pages of Part 4 (Words & Expressions)!
Movie Wrong Choices
Some of you have chosen the wrong movies.
These movies do not appear on the ESL Notes movie list which I told you to use:

Using Movies to Learn English-1 看電影學英文-1
Please form a group of 3 or 4 people with some classmates. Then look at the movies listed on eslnotes. Find a good movie that you want to watch together. eslnotes 這個網站提供許多優良影片的學習資料:人物介紹、歷史背景、文化須知等等,還有單字片、語詳細解說。
1) Go to http://www.eslnotes.com/synopses-a.html and click on "Movie Menu" to choose one of the movies. Here is an example using the movie Amistad.
2) The Microsoft Word document starts with the Major Characters
(= most important people in the movie)
3) Some of the English is not very easy. You can use Google Translate to tell you the main idea. Be careful: some of this "translation" is VERY wrong! 靠Google 翻譯可以了解大意,但要小心:Google 翻譯常常會錯得很離譜!
4) You can also use Wikipedia to find out if you like this movie.
Here is an example using Amistad. Be sure to choose the movie, not the book.
5) English Wikipedia articles can help you find Chinese articles:
6) Scripts are usually too long and too difficult. Use Google to see if you can find a movie transcript or subtitles online: "片名" & "subtitles" 或 "片名" & "transcript."
Everybody must choose one movie before our next class on December 1, 2011. Use the form below to show me your choice:

| 原文:An African farmer of the Mende tribe, who is kidnapped from his West African home and sold into slavery 以上翻譯錯誤蠻多。注意,這裡的 who ≠〝誰〞,who 是關係代名詞(等於中文〝的〞)=從家裡被綁架而販賣為奴隸的非洲西部農民 |

Midterm Topics: Cooking and Drawing
Our midterm will cover the two short video series we have watched.
The 1st series, with Leah Schaefer, was for cooking potstickers [the name is wrong: they should be called "ravioli"] (the complete series is here)
The 2nd series was for drawing, with Paul Louis (the complete series with transcripts is here)

Something Left, Something Taken
After the midterm, we will be watching this lovely animation (you can watch it here first).
Something Left, Something Taken was made by Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata, a husband and wife team. Go here to see how they made the movie. This beautiful short film took them two years to finish!
